TIMEX Marlin 'Porthole' Calendar

This TIMEX Marlin ref. 22772 (blue) and 27774 (brown) have one of the most excentric cases within the TIMEX watch portfolio of the seventies. For a long time, I wasn't convinced that it actually was a genuine TIMEX model. But every time I came across one on the internet, I realized that the TIMEX designers had one moment of erratic creativity and scetched a rectangular robust watch case.   

This case design led amongst a group of vintage TIMEX enthousiasts to the nickname 'Porthole'. That way these cannot be mistaken for the 'Brick' models and the 'Tile' models of TIMEX Marlin watches. The two dial configurations shown above are the known versions of this model reference. Both dial variations can also be found as a Sprite or a normal cased Marlin.

Untill now I only have seen the TIMEX Marlin 'Porthole' published in the Italian TIMEX catalog Collezione '73'. 

Here they put a tachymetre bezel on the watch. However, I have come across several original TIMEX watches where they changed the bezel. Perhaps on the request of the client. 

With a diameter of 36mm, a lug to lug of 43mm and a thickness of 10.5mm it still isn't a huge watch but definitely one with a great wrist presence. Especially with the straps (20mm) that came with the watch. Both in leather as in stainless steel.
